Biomass is a prevalent source of power in the Philippines due to the country’s large agricultural industry: after natural gas and oil, it is the third largest source of energy. Biomass accounts for approximately 15% of the energy used in the Philippines, and this will likely grow as the government has set targets to increase the proportion of renewables to 50% by 2030. There is great potential for biomass to be developed further as an energy source: while over 2 billion tons of biomass are generated per year, only 3.4 million tons are used as fuel.
