The El Atajo hydropower plant makes use of the uneven water levels from the irrigated channels that flow to the cultivation land. The plant uses the water loss from the cultivation irrigation channels and the slopes of the mountains to power the energy of the forestry activities in the surrounding forest areas. As Central El Atajo is a renewable energy source, it is also part of the circular lifecycle of the irrigation water. The construction of the plant was finished in August 2020. It generates 9.5 GWh per year, thanks to its total capacity of 2 MW.
