Argentinian hydro

While Argentina has high potential for hydropower, and indeed a significant proportion of its electricity is generated by hydro, only a small portion of what is feasible has been developed.

Argentina possesses over 10 000 MW of installed hydropower capacity, or a quarter of its total installed capacity for energy. However, the sector remains underdeveloped compared to its potential, as it is estimated the country could develop over 40 000 MW of hydropower capacity, amounting to a potential 130 000 GWh per year. Hydropower represents by far the largest source of renewable energy in Argentina, and will thus be instrumental in achieving the country’s sustainability targets, which include a 30% reduction in emissions by 2030.
